“Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph. The greatest tragedy is not the brutality of the evil, but rather the silence of good people.”
Emperor Haile Selassie
We monitor implementation of the guidelines, recommendations and work of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa (CPTA), the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment by African State parties and the work of the UN’s Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT). We also have expertise in all aspects of the prevention of torture. We fight torture and give torture victims the much needed rehabilitation. We support the AU, AU Member States, justice systems, National Preventive Mechanisms (NPMs), national human rights institutions (NHRIs) and civil society to take effective actions to prevent torture and other ill-treatment and punish perpetrators.
With survivors, we campaign for change in the UK and across the world. Together, we raise awareness and influence decision-makers about torture and its impact.
“Torture is actually worse than unnecessary; it is counterproductive and undermines our national security…. Most importantly, torture violates our core values as a nation.”
